The economy of Northern Italy is top-notch, as you can see from our list, and there is a much more Western European vibe in Bologna, as opposed to a Southern European one. There is a University in town, which brings great nightlife and an educated labor force, which combined with the strong tourist sector and industry, make the city one of the wealthiest in Italy. Venice
Venice is easily one of the most beautiful and charming cities in the world, but outside of the historic center and island, you have a very wealthy and developed region. Veneto is one of the nicer parts of Italy, known for great social services like healthcare and education. Tourism is a huge part of the economy here, but it is a blessing and a curse, often leading to disproportionate rent hikes and crowded streets. Regardless of the tourists, Venice is well worth a visit, and the less popular parts of the city are also amazing to live in.

Many people will be surprised that Rome isn’t the richest city in all of Italy, but the capital has fallen behind in the last few centuries. While it was, arguably, the wealthiest place in the world at one time, nowadays it is a large and often messy city. It’s well worth the visit, which drives crowds of tourists to flock to Rome, and you should definitely come and see it at least once in your life. However, keep in mind that Rome is a bit more chaotic than you might expect from other European cities, especially the other ones on this list.
Milan
Milan is the capital of fashion and finance in Italy. The best universities are here, the biggest companies, and some of the most expensive real estate in the country. Here you will feel like in a wealthy Western-European capital, more similar to Vienna than Rome. However, Milan is distinctly Italian, the food is great and the people are well dressed. If you want to live a high life, go to fancy bars and wear the best clothes, this is the city for you.
